Glossary

Akene

  • Examples: Hazelnuts, Chestnuts and Thistles are all akenes.
Alternate
  • Situated singly at a node, such as leaves or leaflets on a stem or branch at successive levels along an axis. (1)
Annual
  • An annual plant is a plant that usually germinates, flowers, and dies in a single year or season. (1)
Bulbil
  • Small bulblike offset found as a bud on the leaf axil that can produce new plants. May also result from flower transformation. (1)
  • Examples: Garlic, Blooming Rush
Bush
  • A ligneous plant less than 7 m in height with stems that branch from the base. (1)
Composite
  • A leaf whose divisions reach the median nerve. (2)
  • Examples: Butternut, Bitternut Hickory, White Ash
Cultivar
  • Variety of plant resulting from a selection grown for its agronomic qualities.
Dentate
  • A plant segment or organ that is toothed along the edges. (1)
Dioecious
  • A species whose male and female blooms are borne on separate, distinct unisexual plants. (1)
  • Example: Poplar
Hermaphrodite
  • Descriptive of a plant or animal that has both male and female reproductive organs on the same flower. (1)
Indehiscent
  • A stamen or fruit that does not spontaneously open at maturity to discharge its pollen or seeds. (1)
Inflorescence
  • The arrangement of flowers on a plant. (1)
Integer
  • A leaf blade that is neither divided nor dentate. (2)
Leaflet
  • Small leaves that together make up a compound leaf. (1)
  • Examples: Butternut (11-17 leaflets) and Bitternut Hickory (7-11 leaflets)
Ligneous
  • Of a woody nature or consistency. (1)
Limb
  • Each division of a plant organ. (2)
Monocarpic
  • Bearing fruit only once, and then dying: said of annuals, biennials, impatience, and some long-lived plants, such as the bamboos and century plants. (1)
Nervure
  • A prominent longitudinal vein of a leaf or other organ that carries sap. (2)
Opposite
  • Situated diametrically opposite each other at the same node, as leaves, flowers, or branches; situated directly in front of another organ, analogous or not, as stamens opposite the petals. (1)
  • Examples: Maple leaves, buds and rami; Lavander leaves, bracts and glomerules.
Ovate
  • Egg-shaped. (2)
Peduncle
  • A primary flower stalk, supporting either a cluster or a solitary flower. (2)
Perennial
  • A plant that survives at least two years. (1)
Petiole
  • Axis connecting the leaf limb to the stem. (1)
  • The foot-stalk of a leaf. (2)
Pistil
  • The seed-bearing female organ of the flower, consisting of the ovary, stigma, and style, when present. (2)
Raceme
  • An inflorescence composed of pedicelled flowers arranged along the axis which elongates for an indefinite period with corresponding fructification correspondante. (1)
Ramous
  • Divided into a number of branches or rami. (2)
Rhizome
  • An underground fleshy stem, usually horizontal in direction, which emits buds and roots.
Runner
  • A lateral aboveground shoot of certain plants which roots at some of the nodes.
Shrub
  • A ligneous (woody) perennial, usually of modest dimensions (< 4 m), with an undifferentiated trunk, branched from its base. (1, 2)
  • Examples: Canadian Elder, Moosewood, Sweet Gale, Canada Honeysuckle, Canada Yew.
Simple
  • A leaf whose sinus does not reach the median nerve. (2)
Sinus
  • The space or position (not a structure) between two lobes or other divisions. (2)
Spear
  • Bloom characterized by an more or less extended stalk bearing sessile flowers or groups of flowers laterally. (1)
Tendril
  • A specialized twining stem (vine) or leaf extremity filament by which creepers support themselves. (1)
  • Example: Snap Peas
Tetramerous
  • Divided into four parts. (3)
Umbellate
  • Type of inflorescence in which the peduncles begin at a common point and reach the same height. (2)
  • Examples: Flowering Rush, Giant Hogweed
Umbellet
  • Secondary umbellate of a compound umbellate. (1)
  • Example: Carrot
Verticillate
  • A group of identical organs (leaves, flowers, fruits) arranged in whorls around an axis, all at the same level. (1)
Whorled
  • A group of identical organs (leaves, flowers, fruits) arranged in whorls around an axis, all at the same level. (1)
